Carry-On: A Predictable Thrill Ride That Knows What It Is
MOVIE REVIEW

This movie is the perfect throwback to the action thrillers of the past, where logic takes a backseat to pure, unadulterated fun. It’s the kind of film you watch when you're not looking for anything deep or thought-provoking but just want to unwind and enjoy some classic popcorn thrills. The plot is predictable, the characters are stereotypical, and the suspenseful moments—though occasionally absurd—keep you hooked, if only to see what ridiculous turn the story will take next.
Jason Bateman, usually known for his dry humor, completely owns his role as the villain. He’s menacing yet has that trademark charm, which makes his character a lot more fun to watch than your average bad guy. Taron Egerton, on the other hand, is solid as the hero. He doesn’t break any new ground with his performance, but he does what’s required for a role like this, playing the typical hero with a touch of charm and a lot of physicality.
While the film doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking or original, it knows exactly what it’s doing and doesn’t try to be anything more than a high-energy, action-packed ride. The moments of suspense are predictable, but they do the job, delivering just enough tension to keep you invested in the outcome. If you go in with low expectations, looking for a straightforward action flick, you’ll have a great time.
In the end, this film isn’t going to win any awards for storytelling or acting, but it does succeed at what it sets out to do: provide an entertaining, action-packed hour and a half that’s perfect for a Netflix binge. It’s definitely one of those movies where you leave your brain at the door and enjoy the ride.
