You wouldn’t think a show about wine tasting could be so riveting, but Drops of God makes it engrossing. The story, adapted from a manga, revolves around the death of a renowned wine critic and the high-stakes competition between his estranged daughter and his prized student.
Fleur Gaffrier delivers an outstanding performance as Camille Léger, balancing vulnerability and fierce determination beautifully. Tomohisa Yamashita’s Issei Tomine grows on you, transforming from a cold rival into a surprisingly complex character as layers are peeled back.
The show carefully builds its story around meticulous wine-tasting battles that feel almost like high-stakes duels, while also exploring themes of legacy, grief, and personal identity. The cinematography is lush and immersive, making the wine tasting scenes feel almost erotic in their sensory richness. It's a masterclass in turning a seemingly niche subject into compelling drama.
While the series could have been trimmed by an episode or two, and some moments dip into cliché territory, it still stands out as one of the best manga adaptations in recent memory. A delicious and emotional journey worth savoring.
