Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer may not reach the heights of its predecessor, but it still delivers some genuinely cool and memorable moments, most notably the introduction of the Silver Surfer himself. His entrance into the movie is nothing short of epic, with the chase scene involving Johnny Storm standing out as one of the film’s highlights. Laurence Fishburne’s voice acting paired with Doug Jones’ physical performance brings a haunting yet graceful presence to the Silver Surfer, making him one of the more compelling elements of the film.
Jessica Alba gets more to do as Sue Storm this time around, showing noticeable growth in the character. Her emotional interactions with the Silver Surfer are surprisingly heartfelt and give the movie a bit more depth. Johnny Storm and The Thing (Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis) continue to provide great comedic chemistry, adding levity when needed and maintaining that sibling-like rivalry that made the first film fun.
Unfortunately, the film loses steam in the third act. Galactus being reduced to a giant, space-fart cloud was a major letdown and undermines the tension that had been built up. The stakes never feel truly high, and the finale ends up being underwhelming.
Still, for all its flaws, Rise of the Silver Surfer has a charm that’s hard to ignore. Say what you will about the early 2000s Fantastic Four films, but the casting was near perfect. The actors embodied the roles well, and the films nailed the core family dynamic of the team. Despite the campy and cheesy tone, these movies have heart—and that’s something many modern superhero films sometimes forget.
It's far from perfect, but it's a fun ride with iconic moments worth revisiting.
