The Crow: A Soulless Reboot That Fails to Take Flight

MOVIE REVIEW

What a complete snoozefest. Easily one of the dullest movies of the year, and that's saying a lot considering how many mediocre films have come out recently. It's been years since I last saw the original The Crow, so I went into this remake with a fresh perspective, not weighed down by nostalgia.

Unfortunately, even with that clean slate, this movie completely struggles to carve out its own identity. Instead, it comes off as generic, bland, and utterly soulless. Bill Skarsgård genuinely tries his best as the Crow, bringing some intensity to the role, but the material he’s working with doesn’t give him much to build on. The rest of the cast falls embarrassingly short. Danny Huston, usually reliable, seems like he phoned it in for a paycheck. The bond between Eric and Shelly, which is supposed to be the heart of the story, is paper-thin here. They barely spend any meaningful time together before tragedy strikes, so there’s no emotional investment.

FKA Twigs’s performance was particularly awful; there’s zero chemistry with Skarsgård, making it hard to care about their connection or his quest for vengeance. The action scenes, which should’ve been a saving grace, are limp and uninspired. On top of that, the soundtrack is just dreadful—the poor choice of music constantly clashed with the movie’s tone, killing whatever atmosphere it tried to build. This film completely misses the spirit that made the original memorable. What could have been a bold, dark, stylish retelling ends up being a lifeless cash grab that nobody asked for.
