Legacy sequels are difficult to pull off because they have to balance nostalgia with fresh ideas, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 spends most of its runtime walking that tightrope. Thankfully, while the movie doesn’t fully recapture the magic of the original, it does manage to bring back enough of its charm, humor, and stylish energy to remain an enjoyable watch overall.
From the beginning, the movie feels determined to recreate the atmosphere that made the first film so beloved. The fashion is glamorous, the soundtrack is energetic, and the sharp corporate-world satire is still present. There’s a comforting familiarity to seeing these characters again, especially because the returning cast slips back into their roles so naturally. The chemistry between the original characters remains the movie’s biggest strength and easily carries many of the quieter moments.
Where the sequel struggles most is with its newer additions. While none of the new characters are outright terrible, very few leave a lasting impression. Most of them feel underwritten compared to the returning cast, making it difficult to become invested in their storylines. Whenever the movie shifts focus away from the familiar characters, the momentum noticeably slows down.
The story itself also follows a lot of the same narrative beats as the original film. That familiarity works occasionally because it taps into the audience’s nostalgia, but it also makes parts of the movie feel predictable. On top of that, the runtime feels overly long. There’s easily about thirty minutes that could have been trimmed to tighten the pacing and keep the story moving more consistently.
Still, the movie works better than expected because of its updated commentary on modern media, influencer culture, and corporate branding. Some of its strongest moments come when it explores how dramatically the fashion and publishing industries have changed in the digital age. Beneath the comedy and stylish presentation, there are even a few genuinely touching moments about aging, relevance, and adapting to change.
No, it doesn’t reach the heights of the original, but that was always going to be an impossible task. What The Devil Wears Prada 2 does succeed at is reminding audiences why they loved this world and these characters in the first place. It leans heavily on nostalgia, sometimes too heavily, but there’s still enough charm, humor, and style here to make the sequel worth watching.
