Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a visually stunning sci-fi epic that, unfortunately, fails to live up to its potential. Based on the French comic series that inspired classics like Star Wars and Dune, the film attempts to build a sprawling and immersive universe but ultimately gets lost in its own ambition. While the character designs are unique and the visual effects are impressive, the movie struggles to deliver a coherent and engaging story.
The film’s biggest flaw lies in its casting. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, who play the titular characters Valerian and Laureline, lack chemistry and fail to ignite the dynamic that the film desperately needs. DeHaan’s portrayal of Valerian is lackluster, offering little charm or charisma, while Delevingne’s Laureline feels more like a secondary character than a strong lead. The lack of chemistry between the two makes it difficult to invest in their relationship or care about their mission.
The movie starts off strong with an intriguing montage detailing the creation of the city of a thousand planets, but this sense of wonder quickly fades as the film drags on. The story becomes muddled, with the plot losing its way amidst the spectacle. Despite some strong visual moments, the narrative fails to connect the dots in a meaningful way.
If the film had a more focused script and a stronger lead duo, Valerian could have been a more successful sci-fi adventure. As it stands, it’s a visual treat with a convoluted and underwhelming story. It’s a movie that tries to do too much and, in doing so, ends up disappointing. Fans of the genre may still find moments to enjoy, but the film ultimately fails to live up to its lofty aspirations.
